Day geek February 14 congratulations. World day of computer scientist and programmer

« geek day» is an international holiday in honor of computer scientists and programmers. The holiday is still considered unofficial, but it has become so famous and widespread that it is included in many holiday calendars and is celebrated by everyone who is in any way related to computer scientists. The holiday is celebrated on February 14th.

Computers have become such an integral part of our lives that it is perhaps already very difficult to imagine modern life without these devices. Computers have undoubtedly made our life easier and more interesting. Computer technologies are used in all spheres of life, from work to entertainment. Almost everyone uses computers, but there are not so many who create computers themselves, operating systems, programs, work on the Internet, improve the digital world, and also configure, repair and maintain computers. It is thanks to such computer scientists and programmers that we all have the opportunity to use computers and the Internet at full capacity, so this holiday is important and necessary, and every year it becomes more and more relevant.

The date of the celebration of this day was not chosen by chance. On February 14, 1946, the very first working electronic computer ENIAC I (Electrical Numerical Integrator And Calculator) was demonstrated to the scientific world. This event can be called the birth of the era of computers, which simply turned the world upside down and made it better.

Interestingly, "Geek Day" is celebrated on February 14, that is, on or Valentine's Day. In this regard, there was even a joke that on February 14, all computer scientists celebrate the “Day of the programmer in love”. In addition to the February holiday, everyone who is connected with the digital and virtual world on a professional basis celebrates their holidays: September 12 - Programmer's Day, April 4 - Internet Day, as well as System Administrator's Day, which is celebrated on the last Friday of July.

Congratulations on Computer Day

On February 14, IT specialists, system engineers, gurus and experts in digital technologies around the world celebrate an unofficial holiday - the Day of the Computer Scientist. It was on this day in 1946 that the first really working electronic computer ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), created by employees of the University of Pennsylvania for the needs of the United States Department of Defense, began work.

Despite the bulkiness, high power consumption, propensity for high heating of vacuum tubes and their frequent failure, ENIAC worked as an "army calculator" right up to October 1955, after which it gave way to more modern computing solutions that laid the foundation for the technological revolution.
Of course, there were earlier computers, but these are all prototypes and experimental versions. For that matter, the first computer was Babbage's Analytical Engine. But ENIAC was the first computer that really worked on practical tasks. By the way, it was from ENIAC that modern computers inherited the binary system of calculation.
ENIAC was developed to solve one of the serious and necessary tasks of the time: to calculate army ballistic tables. The army had departments involved in the calculation of ballistic tables for the needs of artillery and aviation. People worked in these departments in the position of the Army Calculator. Naturally, the power and performance of these "computing resources" of the army was not enough. That is why cyberneticians at the beginning of 1943 began to develop the concept of a new computing device - the ENIAC computer.

Surprisingly, February 14 Saint Valentine is forced to share with another important holiday - the day of all those in love with a computer. And in our time there are much more of these than simple lovers, in any case, the computer always reciprocates you. Therefore, Computer Geek Day has every chance of ousting Valentine and completely capturing February 14th.

First comp

When do you think the very first computer was born? Someone thinks that in the 70s, 80s, or maybe in the 90s of the last century? But no! The first electronic mechanism, similar to a computer, was born back in 1946. And it happened, just on February 14, when we celebrate Computer Day. Moreover, earlier examples of such units remained in history, but all of them could be called computers with a huge stretch. And the computer, which was born on February 14, was the first machine that performed real, calculated tasks. Apparently, from the great love of its creators.

Enik

Day of the geek on February 14 is directly related to this mysterious abbreviation, for simplicity, we will rename the complex ENIAC to the more familiar Enik. He became the progenitor of modern computers, because it was from him that modern devices received the binary system. But if we compare Enik and an ordinary user's computer, then our contemporaries are the height of scientific thought, and Enik is something like ancient Roman accounts.

History of appearance

Like everything progressive and incredibly smart, Enik was born thanks to the military commissar. The American government desperately needed some kind of system that would easily calculate the ballistic tables used in aviation and artillery. In order to adequately work on the calculations, the defense industry was forced to maintain a whole staff of court calculators. So called people involved in the most complex calculations. This is not column addition. And instead of the Day of the Computer Engineer on February 14, everyone would celebrate the Day of the Calculator. Thank God that the computer was invented after all.

Speed up and deepen!

The design capacity was clearly not enough, and then the Pentagon paid attention to scientists. At the same time, they were playing with some incomprehensible units. It was then that the army gave science some resources, so to speak, for the development of thought and the acceleration of the process of creating universal computing technology. The defense industry clearly did not have enough patience and they constantly got into the process of creating a device. And then the scientists could not stand it, and regardless of the military, they created a fundamentally new gadget. Although, such words were not yet known, it will be invented on the Day of Computer People, in the year of commercials, in 2010.

For money

It was by no means altruists who were involved in the development, so it was necessary to continue financial injections. The total amount of grants for the development of hitherto unseen equipment amounted to almost half a million US dollars. And if you translate this money into a modern exchange rate, it turns out ... almost $ 5 million! Just imagine how many great cars you could give to all hackers and lamers for the Day of the geek!

Result

As a result of the great work done, a real monster was born, the same Enik, consisting of 30 different modules, which had a displacement of more than 30 tons. And inside, this masterpiece was stuffed with vacuum tubes, a total of 19 thousand pieces, hundreds of thousands of resistors and capacitors. This colossus ate almost 200 kilowatts. Enik was engaged in arithmetic operations and could even extract square roots, and up to twenty different, ten-digit numbers could be stored in the superbrain of the machine at the same time. No one needs a gift for the Day of the Computer Scientist in Ukraine, the size of a five-story building?

materiel

Enik worked slowly but surely. Gradually, manually driven in functions and values were transferred from one block to another, from module to module, from value to value. If it was necessary to multiply the numbers, then the speed multiplier module began to work. The speed of multiplication, or rather the speed of obtaining the final result, was achieved thanks to the table built into the module. The whole process took no more than 2.6 milliseconds and this result is for ten-digit numbers. Division, subtraction, root extraction were also incredibly fast (at that time) and took no more than 25 milliseconds for the same ten-digit numbers.

The publication

Computer Day happened on February 14, 1946, when Enik was first introduced to customers from the Pentagon. A few months later, the novelty was already working for the benefit of the United States, solving the most difficult problems in practice. For comparison: an ordinary person, with minimal calculator skills, was able to calculate only 60 trajectories per day, and Enik did it in half a minute. Isn't that a miracle!

workhorse

Faithfully, Enik served his American masters until 1955, and then the Pentagon wished itself a new gift for Computer People's Day. Thus, on October 2, 1955, at 11:45 am Washington time, Enik was retired. This was done, as expected, with honors and glory. It became one of the exhibits of the US Academy Museum, where it is located to this day.

When is geek day

Every year Computer Geek Day is celebrated on the same day as Valentine's Day - February 14th.

Almost everyone knows that - Valentine's Day. However, one holiday for a day is not enough for our person, and on February 14 another one is celebrated - the Day of the Computer Engineer. Although this holiday is unofficial, it is quite important for IT specialists.

February 14 - unofficial geek day

Why 14 February? On this day in 1946, the first truly practical computer, ENIAC I, was presented to the general public.

Naturally, computers were created before him, but they were all prototypes and experimental samples. The development of ENIAC was supported by the US Army, and it was intended to calculate ballistic tables for artillery and aviation. Interestingly, before the advent of ENIAC, these calculations were carried out by specialists who worked as an “army calculator”.

The computer, presented on February 14, 1946, worked until October 2, 1955, after which it was disconnected from the network and disassembled. But “his work lives on” - it was from ENIAC that the binary number system, which is used in modern computers, went.

So, what are its traditions? Oddly enough, there are simply no special traditions. Wide festive celebrations are not arranged on this day, and every computer scientist celebrates it the way he wants. But, of course, no one will refuse congratulations. So if you know IT people, congratulate them on this day.

Russian computer scientists also have an officially established holiday - Programmer's Day, it is celebrated on the 256th day of each year. The number 256 (2 to the eighth power) is by no means chosen by chance, it is this number of values that is expressed by means of an eight-bit byte. In a normal year, Programmer's Day is celebrated on September 13, and in a leap year (including 2016) on September 12.

Behind the heart-shaped postcards and the jubilation of Valentine's Day on February 14, another holiday was lost, which is forgotten or not known at all - the World Day of the Computer Scientist and Programmer. Although it does not have official status, it is celebrated all over the world by IT industry specialists. Abroad, it is celebrated on a large scale. This is a holiday for all those who are associated with system administration, programming, web design, computer hardware and other types of IT activities. True, it is worth making one important reservation: do not confuse this holiday with the Programmer's Day in Russia, which is September 13 according to the calendar.

World Computer and Programmer Day 2019: the history of the holiday

As is common with many dates on the calendar, February 14 is associated with a historical event. On this day in 1946, Americans first showed the world the first computer - "electrical digital integrator and calculator" or ENIAC for short. This huge machine was essentially a simple calculator for performing complex calculations by US military personnel. But it was she who became the prototype of the current computer, which is used by almost every person today. The evolution of computers took place in a very short time, literally in a matter of decades, before the eyes of modern man. And all this thanks to the merits of computer scientists, we owe them one of the greatest inventions. They have earned the right to their professional holiday!

How to celebrate World Day of the computer scientist and programmer?

This date is celebrated by those who already work in the field of IT technologies, and those who are still studying - university students, as well as teachers. Educational institutions hold scientific conferences, seminars, make reports on innovations in the field of information technology, give lectures, organize round tables and invite practitioners from various companies. As for employees of firms, IT specialists arrange corporate parties at work or in entertainment venues. In order for the celebration to be fun and leave pleasant memories, invite, order artists, plan a show program .. View the portfolio of candidates and choose the most suitable one for yourself. It is convenient that many presenters combine their direct work with the services of a screenwriter and will offer your company a unique thematic scenario for the evening. If your budget on the occasion of the Day of the Computer Engineer and Programmer 2019 is limited, you can save on the presenter and entrust the conduct of the holiday to a sociable and active colleague, and order the writing of the program from. Don't neglect the entertainment program. Book some tech entertainment like a virtual reality ride or a robot show. If you have a young team, and you are not averse to “hotter” entertainment, order. Or invite go-go dancers with a modern program.

How to congratulate computer scientists and programmers on February 14?

If you want to congratulate your boss in an original way, on our portal, select and order from him a personal verse with professional jokes or an unusual, creative congratulation in prose. It is also possible for the whole team to record a song as a gift to the chief computer scientist or even come up with a corporate anthem. They will help in this and, which are easy to find in the site directory.

Despite the fact that traditions in Russia on the occasion of the International Day of the Computer Engineer and Programmer 2019 have not yet developed, create your own traditions and celebrate this holiday with colleagues in a way that is fun and has something to remember.
