This holiday has become a universal symbolic holiday of love and care for our common home and is celebrated all over the world to demonstrate support for the protection of the environment. The event was first organized by the Earth Day Network. On this day, in different parts of the world, people who are not indifferent to environmental problems hold events aimed at making the world more clean and responsible.

There are two main periods for the event: in March (closer to the spring equinox) and April 22. In addition, the initiative groups are currently planning and conducting a series of Earth Day activities closer to the summer solstice to make the most of the warm weather and people's free time.

Story. The founder of Earth Day is John Sterling Morton of Nebraska (USA), who at a meeting of the State Department of Agriculture, being Secretary of the Territory, proposed in 1872 to appoint an annual day dedicated to the landscaping of the surrounding area. The proposal was approved and received widespread support from the people of the state. In 1882, Tree Day was declared a state holiday by the Nebraska government on April 22.

On April 22, 1970, in New York (USA), the well-known American politician and activist Senator Gaylord Nelson created a group of students led by Dennis Hayes (a Harvard student), who for the first time organized a national holiday - Earth Day. Since it was a time of active student movements, the initiative attracted a lot of attention. Its participants suggested that ordinary ordinary Americans pay attention to the environmental problems of our time and try to protect the green planet through joint efforts. A year later, a state agency for environmental protection was created in the United States, today it is quite active and has close contacts with government agencies in most countries, including Ukraine.

In 1971, due to the success of the first Day, Senator Nelson proclaimed "Earth Week" (during the 3rd week of April) as an annual event that became extremely popular among the US population. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his work.

The holiday was declared international in 1990. At the initiative of the American Stanford University, the 1990s was proclaimed the "Decade of the Environment". This action has received support in more than 120 countries of the world, and more than 40 countries have joined forces to carry out a campaign to preserve biological diversity. On this holiday, every inhabitant of the planet can make a small contribution to the protection of the environment: clear the surrounding area of ​​garbage, plant at least one tree, refuse to use a car for at least a day.

The event began to be celebrated in Ukraine as a day for the protection of nature, a day of actions in order to attract public attention to the problems of our planet.

In 2009, the UN General Assembly proclaimed International Mother Earth Day, deciding to celebrate it on April 22.

Planet earth logo. The flag of the Earth is not an official symbol of anything (since there is no official planetary government or state). It is a photograph of the planet from space (currently the image taken by the Apollo 17 astronauts on their way to the Moon) against a dark blue background. Traditionally, the Flag is associated with Earth Day and other environmental, peacekeeping and civil international events.

So the question arises - how to protect the Earth from ourselves? All sorts of actions are organized to draw the attention of the population to the problems of the blue planet. One such event is Earth Day. AND, Naturally, the question arises When is World Earth Day 2019? Because this date is by no means formal, just to satisfy curiosity. You just need to prepare, gather friends and take part in events that are held in all countries of our fragile planet.

Who will emerge victorious: nature or man?

There are people who do not understand the danger of intensive use of resources, and even more so a plastic bag or a tin can thrown into the wind. The earth, they say, is big and it will not hurt her. When Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean on his famous Kon-Tiki balsa raft 70 years ago, he saw a clean and transparent surface in front of him. But during the second voyage of another expedition at the beginning of the 21st century, the ocean was unrecognizable: oil stains, bird corpses, hundreds of plastic bottles. Namely, the ocean is our human cradle and from here life appeared.

On the mainland, the situation is no better. On what you will not look everywhere traces of subversive activity of the person. No, he lives quite well, but you can’t say the same about the Earth. So she shows her character with hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, earthquakes. Shakes off himself. So far gently, and then if we don’t change our minds, then even stronger. Scientists, and even ordinary citizens, are thinking about the fate of the planet. Its fate is our destiny, life, well-being.

A lot of activities are being carried out in each country to clean up territories and plant green spaces. And one of the most important which unites citizens of all civilized countries -international earth day. In 2019 it will be held, however, as always on April 22.

And it all started with a simple idea thrown to Harvard students by an American senator: to organize Earth Day. But what was his surprise when not one group or even a faculty, but several thousand people arrived at the environmental event. Subsequently, it was decided to organize a week of the Earth in the next 1971, which was held closer to the date of March 21 for several decades. It was a time of great activity of citizens. The negative impact of man on the surrounding nature was studied and made public. And scientists have made shocking conclusions that by disturbing the ecosystem, we destroy our home.

Actions to protect nature have become extremely popular in the world, and already in 2009 the UN proclaimed Earth Day and set its date. It is permanent - April 22. Like this History of World Earth Day. But it does not end, because more and more new and caring people join the events on this day. Mass character and responsibility are the characteristic features of holding a worldwide action.

A holiday that is gaining more and more popularity in our country every year is Earth Day. Despite the fact that its name is on everyone's lips - you must admit, each of us has at least once read about the actions dedicated to this event - most of us know amazingly little about the holiday itself. And even the question “what date is Earth Day in 2018” can be answered by a few, although the social and environmental significance of the holiday is beyond doubt.

First of all, it is worth clarifying that despite the presence of a fixed date, Earth Day is not just an annual holiday that lasts a day, but a whole series of various events and promotions that last all spring. The first speeches, manifestos, demonstrations dedicated to the difficult ecological situation of our planet begin in the second half of March, most often on the Day of the vernal equinox. The series of events usually ends a month later, by the end of April. However, some promotions last until the Summer Solstice.

We will be celebrating our forty-sixth Earth Day. This holiday is regularly celebrated in the spring, when the whole planet seems to wake up from a deep winter sleep. But when is World Earth Day 2018?

However, part of the action starts on March 20, the day of the vernal equinox, which is very symbolic. World Earth Day 2018 will be largely devoted to the problems of the planet's water resources, primarily to the supply of clean drinking water to certain areas.

history of the holiday

Strange as it may seem, the holiday owes its appearance entirely to politics. More specifically, the political ambitions of Gaylord Nelson, US Senator. At one of his speeches at Harvard, Nelson appealed to students to help solve the problems of the world ecology. Dennis Hayes, an activist in the student movement, organized a small (at first) group to which he called everyone who was not indifferent to the issues of land depletion. The students decided to hold a rally to draw public attention to such important issues. The action took place on April 22, 1970 - from here the countdown of the history of the holiday begins.

The 1970s was a time of active youth protests in the United States against the government's policies. Of course, the rally in support of the environmental movement could not fail to attract the attention of the press. A year later, the action took place again, but this time there were an order of magnitude more participants in it. A few years later, events designed to draw attention to the ecosystem of the planet have already taken place in almost every major city in America. The senator himself, who once initiated the action, by his own admission, did not expect such a large-scale response.

Four decades later, the once student initiative was supported by the UN. At the next assembly, it was decided to establish a new international holiday - Earth Day.

Holiday symbolism

Earth Day has three official symbols - the flag, the logo and the Peace Bell.

Flag. The unofficial Flag of the Earth is used at the celebration - a photograph of the planet from space, located on a dark blue canvas.

Logo. As a logo, and sometimes even a flag, the letter of the Greek alphabet - tete - is used, made in grass green on a white background. Green, according to tradition, symbolizes ecology, environmental friendliness and environmental safety.

Peace Bell. The bell is a symbol of peace and tranquility, and the ringing of bells is a call to preserve the eternal values ​​of Humanity. For the first time, the Bell sounded in 1954 in New York, at the UN Headquarters on Earth Day, in honor of the solidarity of the inhabitants of the Earth in matters of protecting the planet. The bell itself is cast from coins collected by children from all over the world. In 1989, a second Peace Bell appeared, this time in Germany. The tradition of installing such structures in honor of Earth Day was picked up by other countries of the world, and in 1998 Russia joined them.

International Earth Day 2018 will celebrate the first time on March 20, and massively celebrate on April 22. The last date is the official date of the celebration. Earth Day is a celebration where everyone can take part and contribute to the conservation of natural resources. This year the holiday will be dedicated to the problem of supplying drinking water to certain areas.

Earth is the only planet filled with life. Thanks to her, people exist, meet a new day, listen to the chirping of birds and enjoy the bright colors of nature. This is a home for a person and all living things on it. How the Earth appeared, no one really knows. Perhaps it was God himself who created her, or, by coincidence, her appearance occurred.

On this day, it is customary to spend subbotniks at work, clean the adjacent territories of courtyards, plant trees and shrubs in parks, and, if possible, refuse to travel by car. Also in stores they offer to purchase ecological cardboard bags that do not harm the environment.

The first date (March 20) of the holiday takes place on the day of the spring equinox, and carries a protest against wars and destruction throughout the living world. The second one (April 22) calls to preserve the ecological and natural environment of the earth.

It is worth clarifying that this is not just a day on which a holiday is held, but a whole series of events that continue throughout the spring.

Also, each nation has its own date for the celebration of the Earth. If we take, for example, the Slavs, then on the Day of the Holy Spirit they celebrated the day of Mother Earth. And before the advent of Orthodoxy, Earth Day was celebrated on May 22.

On this day, people bowed to the ground and asked the gods for all earthly blessings. The protectors of the earth were considered the god of wealth and harvest - Veles and his wife, the goddess of fate - Makosh. On the day of the Earth, it was not allowed to carry out any excavation work, to stick tools and other kinds of objects into it.

Earth Day March 20

On March 20, 1840, activist John Morton, along with his like-minded people, planted many trees and plants. This public American activist, after 32 years, was among the leaders of the state of Nebraska, with a proposal to treat nature with care and humanity. Also, the day of planting trees with his supporters, proposed to designate the Day of the tree.

The leadership of Nebraska reacted positively to his idea. Indeed, in the 1970s, student initiatives were supported in every possible way. This attracted great interest from the people. Students acted on this day with rallies, posters. Processions and festivals were held, at which they called for preserving nature, maintaining its ecological environment.

People loved this celebration. They gladly went out into the street and took part in the gardening of their city. Everything passed with songs and conversations, and at the end they held festive gatherings with dances and concerts.

In 1971, the United Nations declared the vernal equinox as Earth Day. The holiday was very popular in America. Along with the traditions, the custom appeared to ring the Peace Bell, which was placed in honor of the victims of nuclear explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The sound of the bell reminds everyone of what happened and calls on the inhabitants of the world to carefully treat the earth. These tragedies caused not only human casualties, but also huge environmental damage.

Time will pass and such Bells will be built in many cities of the world. On Earth Day, they sound everywhere, urging people not only to remember what happened, but also to try to prevent it from happening.

World Earth Day has its own flag with the image of our planet. The planet on the flag was filmed from space. The photo is located on a dark blue canvas. The holiday also has a logo in the form of the Greek letter Ө (-tete-) on a white background. It is made in green, which, as is customary, symbolizes the environment and its safety.

The story originates from the student movement formed by Nelsan. He thought that the environmental movement would be a one-time event. But the idea was liked and taken root by the people. Every year the number of people participating in rallies and processions increased.

When the figure reached 20 million, activist Nelson concluded that he had just begun, and Earth Day created itself.

Nelson tried to convey to people that by destroying nature, they are destroying themselves. What happens as a result of improvement and development of technologies:

• air pollution;
• many species of animals and plants are disappearing;
• water bodies are polluted.

All this is due to the fault of man. As a result, many laws related to the preservation of the environment have been approved. In 2009, the United Nations officially designated April 22 as World Earth Day.

Around the world on this day it is customary to celebrate:

2. parades;
3. festivals;
4. environmental activities.

All of them are aimed at preserving and improving the environment around us. Writers and singers perform, urging people to think about their attitude to the world with their creativity. Schoolchildren draw pictures on the theme of the holiday, conferences are held at institutes, where they also promote protecting nature.

Earth Hour is an hour of energy savings. This idea was put forward by the World Wildlife Fund. During Earth Hour, everyone on the planet turns off the electricity in their homes. This also applies to companies that are willing to sacrifice an hour of their profits. Thus, supporting the idea of ​​the World Wildlife Fund.

During Earth Hour, people stop using computers, phones, turn off all electrical appliances in the house. In the cities that participate in the action, and there are more than 400 of them, the illumination of buildings and famous monuments is turned off. Flash mobs are often held on this topic.

This event was also liked by the people and quickly became popular. Although the electricians don't see it as making any sense, they claim there is no improvement. But the idea is to conserve resources and try to reduce emissions.
