Railwayman's Day is all about the holiday. Railwayman's Day in Russia When is the railwayman's day?

Holidays are constant companions of people's life. Holidays for us are an opportunity to bring joy to loved ones! And of course, a holiday is not a calendar concept, it happens where it is felt, where it is expected. A lot has changed in our lives in recent years, but people's craving for holidays remains an important phenomenon for any person.

On the first Sunday in August, workers of the country's steel lines, as always, celebrate their professional holiday - Railway Worker's Day. In 2019, this holiday will be celebrated on August 4.

History of the Railwayman's Day holiday

The Railwayman's Day holiday has a long history. It was established back in 1896. The new holiday was timed to coincide with a special date for the country - the birthday of Emperor Nicholas on June 1-25 (or July 6 according to the new style).

Let us remember that it was this ruler who began to build the first railway in Russia. During his reign, the first railway was created, which led to Tsarskoe Selo and was used for recreational purposes. The appearance of the first all-Russian highway, which stretched from St. Petersburg to Moscow, dates back to the same time. It should be noted that the Committee of Ministers then opposed the construction of railways in Russia, but the tsar insisted on his decision. He dreamed of bringing St. Petersburg closer to Moscow.

Active railway construction contributed to the fact that the length of railways by the end of the century before last already exceeded 33 thousand km.

For the first time, Railway Worker's Day was established by order of Prince Mikhail Khilkov, who was the Minister of Railways of Russia. This order was issued on June 28, 1896 - July 9 according to the new style.

All railway transport employees began to celebrate the new holiday, not only here, but also in some European countries.

Traditions

The Railwayman's Day holiday was celebrated on a grand scale. All railway institutions were closed on this day. In the evening, a dinner with a concert was traditionally held in the hall of the Pavlovsky station of the Tsarskoye Selo railway. Thanksgiving prayers were held at train stations and major stations. The celebration was especially solemn on the Fontanka embankment near house 117, which at that time housed the Ministry of Railways. Senior officials of the Ministry of Railways were present at the celebration here.

Moreover, Railwayman's Day until 1917 was celebrated on June 25. After the October Revolution of 17, this holiday was abolished for almost twenty years.

It was decided to revive the tradition of honoring railway workers only in 1936. In 1935, from July 25 to July 30, a meeting of railway workers was held in Moscow. At it, railway workers came up with a proposal to revive the forgotten holiday. At that time, the country was undergoing a period of industrialization, so railway transport was very important for its economic development.

The government issued a decree according to which it was decided to hold the Day of Railway Transport of the USSR every year on August 30.

A special issue of the Gudok newspaper, published on July 29, 1936, informed the public that Railway Transport Day was declared a national holiday. Its first celebration took place throughout the country. In the capital, the central venues for celebrating this day were two capital parks - Sokolniki and Gorky Park.

In 1940, the government of the Soviet Union issued a decree moving this holiday to the first Sunday in August. In the 80s of the 20th century, the holiday was renamed Railwayman's Day.

Currently, Railway Worker's Day can already be called international, because... is celebrated not only in our country, but also in Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Ukraine and some countries of Eastern Europe.

It should be noted that Railway Worker's Day can be considered one of the first professional holidays in Russia. On this day it is customary to congratulate everyone involved in the railway business.

Railways and the railway industry

Railways play a very important role in the life of any country. They are the main transport artery that connects cities. Today in our country railways are the most popular and accessible mode of transport.

The railway industry today is deservedly proud of its history and traditions. Stable passenger and cargo connections are maintained between Russian regions.

The railway operates efficiently and uninterruptedly, which makes a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of our country.

History of the formation of railway transport

The world history of the development of railway transport is also quite interesting. The ancestors of the railways we are familiar with existed in ancient times. To transport heavy loads, the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans created rutted roads. In the Middle Ages, rails and carriages made of wood were used in mines. But they were not practical and were replaced by metal ones around 1738. Richard Reynolds placed steel rails on the access roads to the mines in 1767.

Trevithick decided to put his car on rails in 1803. He changed the design of the car, turning it into a steam locomotive with a steam pipe inside. But this design also had some disadvantages.

George Stephenson managed to summarize and analyze them. In 1814 he developed his first steam locomotive. True, he moved very slowly and did not have a large carrying capacity.

The first railway was opened between the English cities of Liverpool and Manchester in 1830. Since then, intensive development of railway transport has begun all over the world.

About half of the world's railway network at the beginning of World War II belonged to seven countries: the USSR, the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan and Italy.

Railway transport in Russia

Rail transport in our country today is one of the largest railway networks in the world. It has about 86 thousand km of railway tracks, half of which are electrified.

In terms of the total length of railway tracks in the world, Russia now ranks second after the United States. It ranks first in terms of the length of electrified roads.

At the beginning of the last century, the most ambitious road was built - the Trans-Siberian Railway, which connected the European part of Russia with the Far East and the Urals.

In 2001, the Government of our country approved a program for major reform of the railway transport system. On September 18, 2003, JSC Russian Railways was created. It is considered today one of the largest transport companies in the world.

We cordially congratulate everyone involved in the railway business on the holiday, Happy Railwayman's Day!

The new holiday became the first professional holiday for railway transport employees, not only in the Russian Empire, but also in Europe. The date of the annual celebration of Railwayman's Day by all central and local institutions in charge of railways in Russia is integrally connected with the birthday of Emperor Nicholas I, June 25 (July 6, new style). Russian Emperor Nicholas I is considered the founder of the railway business in Russia. Under him, the first pleasure railway to Tsarskoe Selo and the first all-Russian highway from St. Petersburg to Moscow were built.

Railway Worker's Day is the first professional holiday in Russia. It was established by order of the Ministry of Railways dated July 9, 1896 and dedicated to the birthday of Emperor Nicholas I, who began the construction of railways in Russia. Celebrated annually on June 25 (July 6, new style).

On this day, the railway workers rested, and in the evening, as a rule, a gala reception with a concert was held in the hall of the Pavlovsky station of the Tsarskoye Selo railway.

The tradition of celebrating Railway Worker's Day was revived on the initiative of the railway workers themselves, who for the first time in many years exceeded the transportation plan in 1935.

At the end of July 1935, at a reception for railway workers held in the Kremlin, an initiative was put forward to celebrate professional labor successes annually. By government decree of July 28, 1936, the professional holiday of railway workers was set on July 30. Later, its celebration was moved to the next day off.

Currently, Russian railways are the second largest transport system in the world, second only to the United States in terms of the total length of operational tracks. Russian railways rank first in the world in terms of the length of electrified railways. The Russian Federation currently accounts for more than 20% of the freight turnover and 10% of the passenger turnover of all railways in the world.

Due to their geographical location, Russian railways are an integral part of the Eurasian railway network; they are directly connected to the railway systems of Europe and East Asia. In addition, interaction with the transport systems of North America can be carried out through the ports.

Railways are organically integrated into the unified transport system of the Russian Federation. In interaction with other modes of transport, they satisfy the transportation needs of the population, the economy and the state. At the same time, railway transport is the leading element of the transport system; its share in passenger and freight transportation is more than 40% of the country’s total transport.

The leading position of railways is determined by their ability to carry out year-round regular traffic, transport the bulk of bulk cargo flows and ensure the mobility of labor resources. The particular importance of railways is also determined by the long distances of transportation, the poor development of communications of other modes of transport in the regions of Siberia and the Far East, the remoteness of the places of production of the main raw materials from the points of their consumption and sea ports.

On September 18, 2003, by decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Open Joint Stock Company "Russian Railways" was established. The sole shareholder of JSC Russian Railways is the Russian Federation. The powers of the shareholder are exercised by the government of the Russian Federation.

At the end of 2016, JSC Russian Railways transported 1.371 billion passengers (+1.6% compared to 2015), of which 101.4 million (+3.6%) on long-distance routes, 935.7 million on suburban routes (+1.4%). The holding's total revenues for 2016 increased by 7.1% compared to 2015 and

Railways became especially widespread during the reign of Nicholas I. For the first time in Russia, two large cities were connected - Moscow and St. Petersburg. A route was laid out for travel to Tsarskoe Selo. In connection with the joyful events, the sovereign decided to celebrate Railway Worker's Day on July 6. This continued until the revolution came.

After 1930, the revival of the holiday began. People needed to raise their working spirit, so thanks to a small group of front-line workers, the railway worker's day was resumed. Initially it was planned for the end of July, but with the onset of the weekend it was moved to the first Sunday in August.

Railway Worker's Day is an international day. It is celebrated in all former Soviet republics.

Celebration

The main purpose of the holiday is to show the prestige of the profession of a railway worker. On this day, ceremonial concerts are held, where senior management and the city administration award certificates of honor, diplomas and cash prizes to the most outstanding employees, labor veterans who have worked and continue to work on the railway.

Events often take on the scale of action, so concerts with pop stars are often held on this occasion in large cities. Most events are free and anyone can come to the concert.
